Wingham and Valley Vets are proud to be considered a Partner in Veterinary Education with the University of Sydney Faculty of Veterinary Science.
Every month we allow a final year Veterinary Student to undertake a 4 week clinical rotation with us to hone their practical skills and theoretical knowledge before graduation. This is of vital importance to their professional development and greatly improves the graduates’ readiness for their first year of practice. Our students tell us that they greatly appreciate this opportunity, and we often get lovely feedback from the students about our staff and the standards and quality of care within our hospital.
We also consider this to be an excellent learning opportunity for the practice, as the students bring with them the very best up-to-date knowledge, which helps us to maintain our high standards of patient care. It also gives our veterinarians permission to access to the University of Sydney library and journal databases. This is incredibly useful to the veterinarians for researching complicated cases and helps us pursue our clinic goal of being the ‘best-practice practice’!
Many of the clinical placements are both small and large animal oriented, so often our large animal vets will be accompanied by a final year veterinary student on farm visits. With clients’ permission, we like to offer the students as many learning opportunities as possible, always under the direct supervision of the attending veterinarian. If you would prefer our students not to handle your animals, please don’t hesitate to advise the attending veterinarian.
